CNN —Another day, another record broken by Iowa’s Caitlin Clark. In the Hawkeyes’ 95-62 Big Ten Tournament win against the Penn State Lady Lions on Friday, Clark eclipsed NBA star Steph Curry’s record of most three-pointers hit in a single NCAA Division-I season. However, Clark has now surpassed the man who many consider the greatest three-point shooter in the history of basketball. Clark eventually found her groove and was able to sink the crucial three to write her name in yet another page of the history books. In a win against the Ohio State Buckeyes on March 3, Clark overtook Hall of Famer “Pistol” Pete Maravich’s record of 3,667 points.

CNN —Iowa’s Caitlin Clark continues to rack up the milestones as she moved into fourth on the all-time NCAA Division I women’s basketball scoring leaderboard. The reigning consensus national player of the year dropped 32 points in a 96-50 blowout win against the Wisconsin Badgers on Wednesday as she passed WNBA legend Brittney Griner in the record books. “I was really happy with our defense in this game,” Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder said after the game. Charlie Neibergall/APIn her senior year, Clark is leading the nation with 30.9 points per game and Kelsey Plum’s all-time women’s college basketball scoring record of 3,527 is now a tangible target. Her performances have been credited with increasing the popularity of women’s college basketball.

Spring witnessed the highest-profile women’s college basketball tournament ever, with Iowa’s Caitlin Clark becoming the sensation of March Madness. The WNBA, after 26 seasons, is finally gaining traction on TV and attendance was up 16% this season. In soccer, the Women’s World Cup was a rousing success and the domestic league, the NWSL, just concluded its 10th full campaign. It’s easy to assume that these gains are the inevitable product of Title IX, the law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in education. Two generations of Title IX legislation has given women’s sports a vital seismic jolt, but it took a confluence of events in the 1970s to make today’s breakout possible.

As last Sunday’s NCAA Elite Eight game between the Iowa and Louisville women’s basketball teams unfolded, the court at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena seemed to become a Broadway stage with an invisible spotlight tracking one player: the Hawkeyes’ Caitlin Clark. When the curtain fell, Clark not only finished with a jaw-dropping 41 points in Iowa’s 97-83 win. She added 12 assists and 10 rebounds to produce the first official 40-point triple-double in an NCAA tournament game. (Assists didn’t become an official stat until 1984.)
